The problems of illegal logging affect many regions of Russia, including the Irkutsk region, which is not prosperous in this regard. Moreover, the region occupied the leading position in illegal activity among the regions of Russia. To solve this problem, in order to curb the illegal origin of wood and transactions with it, reduce corruption in the forest sector, the “Pilot project for marking all harvested wood in the Irkutsk Region” was introduced by decree of the President of the Russian Federation. In 2017, the Government of the Irkutsk region, this project entered into implementation. The article describes the stages of the Pilot project implementation, the tasks set, their implementation and the preliminary results obtained. An analysis of the legislative and organizational activities of government structures is given. However, it was revealed that due to the latent nature of the crimes, the shadow business is being masked, rearranged, and transformed under the circumstances. Emphasis is being placed on this stage of the priority task of optimizing the Pilot Project - this is a search for effective ways to enhance the control of executive authorities in the main production chain, i.e. in timber harvesting. The problem under consideration is relevant, significant and important in the light of the solution of these problems and its successful solution will make it possible to apply in the future the experience gained in a number of other regions of the country.
