An undeniable indicator of the quality of life in any country is the average life span. In 2011 in Russia the figure was 70.3 years and thus the highest indicator throughout its history has been reached. The article analyzes transformational changes in this country in different historical periods. The data on the life span of the nation serve as a barometer indicating its health - both literally and figuratively. Can we be proud of today’s life span in this country? The author»s conclusion is disappointing: we can take pride only in comparison with our past and should acknowledge a growing gap between the mortality rates in Russia and other countries, including underdeveloped ones.
