This publication is a presentation of the results of the first part of the research of foreign insurance supervision practices, the diversity of organizational and legal forms, the current state and trends of the global mutual insurance market. In this part of the work considers the peculiarities of legal regulation of activity of mutual insurance societies in the countries of the European Union. Besides the material presented describes the different ways the organization of mutual insurance businesses in the real contemporary practice of European countries and the USA. The material is provided with the necessary data, comments and conclusions to them. The study used methods of analysis and synthesis of information from various sources, including sources in English and French. The scientific value of this publication lies in the fact that it presents a wide layer of important information about the activities of mutual insurance companies in modern international practice on the basis of sources little known in Russia. In addition, this article is a necessary basis for the second part of the study, which will be devoted to the study and analysis of various indicators and current trends in the development of the global mutual insurance market.
