Effective financial intermediation is an indispensable condition for the development of the modern economy and is actively being studies by scientists of different countries. The paper defines such intermediation as a specific entrepreneurial activity involving the transformation of temporarily free cash assets into credit resources. The scientific novelty of the article is the definition and description of the dependence of the development of financial intermediation on the state of macroeconomic sphere and the application of financial innovations. Financial intermediation is declining in an environment of declining real interest rates, and due to the use of mutual lending. Analysis of current trends in the development of financial intermediation is of interest to developers of macroeconomic policy, financial analysts, private and institutional investors.
