Abstract:

The article traces the emergence of such a social phenomenon as orphanhood. The authors aim to reveal the peculiarities of this phenomenon through the prism of Russian history. Today this topic is relevant because it is necessary to improve the effectiveness of social work in the field of orphanhood. In unstable political and socio-economic situation, changing motivations for social and economic behavior, negative trends in families have been exacerbated, sources of children's disadvantage have expanded, and the number of children who have fallen into a difficult life situation, including orphans, increases. Throughout each historical period we may see the development and establishment of the system of charity.

Highlights:

• Care for children who were left without parental supervision, in the early periods of the formation of the Russian statehood, was not a duty of the state.
• Analysis of historical periods allows us to compare the social and legal status of orphans, draw conclusions and prevent future mistakes.
