Abstract:

The object of this research is the so-called yerida, in other words, re-emigration of Israeli citizens from the State of Israel. The specifics of migration statistics in Israel are the subject of the study. The study is based on statistics provided by the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS) of Israel and independent researchers. The author considers the history and scale of Jewish immigration to the territory of modern Israel. The article then reviews the methods for preparing statistical records on re-emigration used by the CBS of Israel and their specifics leading to mismatches with the statistics from other sources. The author also examines the causes of emigration from Israel, its main destinations and the number of Israeli citizens living abroad. The main conclusion of the study is the biased character of Israeli statistics on emigration due to political reasons and the necessity to reform statistical accounting in order to allow independent expertise and make provisions for an adequate political response to emigration.

Highlights:

Emigration remains a sensitive issue for the Israeli government
Nevertheless, the desire to emigrate among the Israelis mostly stems from common reasons, such as education or job opportunities
