Abstract:

Nowadays research activity and its findings depend mainly not only on the researcher's and research group's qualification but on the used means of information exchange and on the presentation of researchers in scientific community. The global reach of computers and Internet allowed taking these aspects to a new level and changing the nature of scientific communication. There are many Internet-services and tools that help researchers both to communicate with the colleagues in their institution and worldwide, and to systematize and structure work process. It concerns searching for scientific information necessary for conducting the research, information storage an exchange. On the other hand, these services help solving the problem of the presentation of the research to the scientific community, ease entering of young researchers into their professional sphere, give the opportunity to find researchers interested in similar issues. The number of such services is quite large, they offer different approaches and mechanisms. Some of them concentrate on solving global problems such as scientometrical indicators record systems, others make everyday work easier. Unfortunately, in Russia due to various reasons such tools have rather restrictive distribution, many researchers do not use any of the services that limits the opportunities of their cooperation. This article aims at presenting an overview of existing methods of scientific communication, their advantages and new trends and tools modifying the cooperation between researchers, as well as problems impeding the distribution of these services among Russian scientists. The author considers various tools and services for scientific communication, their evolution and development trends, points out problems hindering the usage of the tools, and describes the experience of the Vologda Research Center of Russian Academy of Sciences in promoting such services to intensify their implementation in the research work of research fellows and postgraduate students.
