The article examines the Russian and foreign approaches to the use of the potential of digital technologies in the financial system to control inflation, improve productivity and welfare of the population. We consider the introduction of modern financial instruments, and electronic technologies from the standpoint of improving the competitiveness of the system during the formation of a new financial space. We list the major issues that must be addressed for optimal use of the newest technologies, namely, development of the regulatory framework, training, and increase in computing, power and infrastructure capacity. We prove the need to study positive international experience in the definition and use of virtual currency. We mark the special role of improving the tax law for transactions made via electronic systems. We describe risks and prospects arising during fulfillment of the potential of the digital economy.
