The article considers the methods for assessing fodder crops, which have been proposed by different researchers of Ukraine and Russia since 1968; we describe their disadvantages and advantages. We draw conclusions that all studies methods are tools for obtaining the information for decision-making on the structure of fodder production and rations. However, the results obtained by applying the reviewed instruments are insufficient for drawing final conclusions and decision-making. It is also necessary to take into account the other factors, in particular, the requirements for crop rotation, the prices for fodder and supplement feeds, the synergistic and antagonistic effect of additional feeds, the physiological capabilities of animals, delivery costs to the sites of preparation for feeding, preparation for feeding, delivery to feeding places etc.
Highlights:
• Current methods for economic assessment of fodder crops do not take into account a number of factors related to their use and the needs of animals.
• The main indicators for the economic assessment of fodder crops can be the land productivity, the pure yield per hectare of feed units and digestible protein, and their cost per unit of money.
• In order to make final decisions on the structure of feed production and rations it is also necessary to take into account the requirements for crop rotation, the prices of fodder and supplement feeds, the synergistic and antagonistic effect of additional fodders, the physiological potential of animals, delivery costs to the sites of preparation for feeding, preparation for feeding, delivery to feeding places etc.
