Modern economy is a post-industrial economy and it is often called the innovative knowledge economy and networking competences. The beginning of the XXI century has brought the development of digital technologies on the basis of information revolution and processes of economic globalization. Information in society and management processes has become the main resource. In the hands of man it transforms into knowledge, and socio-economic relations are increasingly being transferred to the network space. The development of digital culture is the key factor of digital transformation in the activities of business entities. At the present stage, the institutional structure of transformational society has its own characteristics and requires the emergence of digital economy, which in turn necessitates the digitization of entrepreneurial structures. Improvement of competitiveness of business structures in domestic and foreign markets is related to the transition to an innovative model of economic development involving a high concentration of high technology production, knowledge, competences and technologies. At the same time the current level of innovative development of Russian entrepreneurial sector does not fully meet the expectations related to the formation of a new economy of an innovative type. In this situation foreign and Russian experience of economic activity shows that the digitization of economic entities is becoming an indispensable tool which can promote the susceptibility of business structures to innovations and improve their innovative activity in general. The authors show the essence and characteristics of the digital economy, which they consider in three aspects. We present issues and trends in the digitalization of the economy as a whole, and business structures in particular. We analyze the impact of digitalization processes on the competitiveness of entrepreneurial structures.
