As we approach the 10th anniversary of the big financial crisis, the global economy shows encouraging signs of recovery. However, despite the positive trends, the leaders of most countries face serious difficulties, namely: the uneven distribution of benefits from economic progress, the growth of income disparities in advanced economies, the deterioration of the environmental situation, etc. Together with the growth rates, which remain below the historical level, the prospects for the development of the world economy become even more uncertain. In the article using the data of the Global Competitiveness Index (GCI) we analyze at what stage of development the Russian Federation (RF) is; we determine the current state and dynamics of the 12 key GCI parameters and identify the drivers of the regional economy and the position of the country in relation to BRICS countries; we also assess its potential in the world space and list the most significant restrictions arising from entrepreneurial activity.
