In the current economic conditions, one of the directions of Russia's industrial policy is the formation of a high-tech, competitive industry that ensures the transition of the state's economy from the export-raw to the innovative type of development. The transition to the innovative development path is impossible without the engineering industry as an effective mechanism for the creation, introduction and promotion of science-intensive technologies in production. The article considers the current approaches to definition and classification of engineering as a type of economic activity. We identify and analyze the obstacles to the development of engineering services market in Russia.
