Abstract:

This article examines the current state of the library industry as a social institution and as an integral part of modern global information environment. On the basis of statistical data we conducted the analysis of libraries efficiency, accessibility and relevance. We revealed a number of issues and presented recommendations for the preservation and development of the system of public libraries in the Russian Federation.

Highlights:

• the only obstacle to obtaining electronic services in the libraries of different regions of our country is the lack of proper equipment and Internet access
• by the number of published books, Russia takes the fourth place in the ranking of world book publishing
• number of public libraries has been steadily declining, decreased availability of library services
• the violation of the law on legal deposit copy, especially electronic, in the near future will have significant "gaps" in the funds and to make that up will be harder than for the printed documents because of the greater vulnerability of electronic information
• a necessary condition of leadership in the library field is scientific and methodical activity of libraries: analytical, methodical, consulting
