The article describes the role of business intelligence in the development strategy of a company. The paper also describes the services and tools of business intelligence. We draw a conclusion that economic society can use business intelligence as a protection tool against external risks, including the threat of takeover, on the one hand. On the other hand the company can use this tool for the purpose of unfriendly acquisition of the object of interest. In view of the proliferation of corporate raidings in Russia, we put forward the idea that companies unsatisfied with information obtained with the help of business intelligence can use the business espionage. We list the reasons for the growth in demand for the services of "corporate scouts".
