The article describes and analyses a number of hypotheses (cyclical, environmental, conflict theories, "Big Middle" concept), which explain how the new forms of retail emerge and develop. We also illustrate the interdisciplinary nature and priority research areas in economics. The theoretic points and conclusions given in the article will be of use to entrepreneurs-representatives of Russian retail, post-graduates, researchers in retail; they can be used to develop the strategies for the development of the industry and trade enterprises.
