Abstract:

The article presents the results of a sociological study of the adaptation of European expats to the socio-cultural environment and the labor market of the city of St. Petersburg. The main objectives of the analysis are to assess the migration potential and motivational reference points of foreign specialists, to determine strategies for the adaptation of European expats in the socio-cultural environment of St. Petersburg. As a method, an in-depth interview has been used, which allowed to reveal the subject matter of the topic. The author gives a number of general recommendations, as well as determines the most popular adaptation strategy and its basic characteristics.

Highlights:

► key research question was "Why citizens of the European Union with freedom of movement and work within the European Union, choose St. Petersburg as a city of immigration, knowing the difficulties of such a step?"
► motivational potential lies exclusively in the migrant, in his personal characteristics including his financial position and social status
► the study showed the presence of two of the most popular motivations for migration in Russia, particularly in St. Petersburg, first, like getting new experiences, adventure, and second, as the opportunity for career growth or getting work experience
► some European expats consider the Russian labor market as an opportunity to learn new skills in the industry
► expats focused only on the adaptation of the organization, build communication for the only purpose of building and maintaining professional relationships
► the majority of respondents (European expats) represent migrants, one way or another focused on getting "extreme" labor and life experience
