The article conducts a quantitative analysis of the key aspects of the macroeconomic phenomenon of unemployment in the Russian Federation for the period 2012-2016. We calculated indexes accepted in the world and domestic practice (employment level, unemployment rate, etc.) and analyzed their dynamics. We have made an attempt to assess the efficiency of the state regulation of unemployment in Russia. Along with the traditional indexes we calculated new indexes that allow to approximately assess direct and indirect state’s costs, which it is forced to bear because of unemployment, i.e. to determine economic consequences of unemployment. We justify the inapplicability of Okun's law for the current domestic economy.
