In the article we define virtual lavatory as a way of scientific collaboration in the broad and narrow sense of the word. We give a brief review of current online forms of organization of scientific activity. We point out the reasons for the limited representation of science on the Internet. We suggest a design principle of organizing virtual laboratories. We examined two main ways of development of laboratories such as Internet project and virtual reality. Within the frames of the Internet project, we studied the principles of virtual laboratory site management. We found out that the Internet project cannot ensure the stable existence of virtual laboratories. Using the example of the Tviniti project we examined the possibilities of organizing the fully virtual scientific laboratory. We show current limitations for its organization in the global network.
