The article examines the current situation of small and medium-sized businesses in Russia. We conducted a comparative analysis of qualitative and quantitative indicators of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Russia and developed countries, include China. We stress the need to strengthen the support of export-oriented small and medium-sized enterprises, also at the private companies’ expense. We analyzed the impact of the business environment on the development of small and medium-sized enterprises.
