Abstract:

The economic space has a significant impact on business activities and the development of small and medium-sized enterprises. Relationships between the characteristics of economic area and the results of activity of small and medium-sized enterprises are important for improving the efficiency of business and regional development. However, the current studies in businesses usually do not pay attention to spatial aspects. The article presents the characteristics and content of territorial concentration and reduction of mobility of small and medium-sized enterprises under the impact of economic space characteristics, and shows their impact on business. After the analysis of the main points of center-periphery theory by J. Friedman we reveal the role of small and medium-sized enterprises in smoothing of inhomogeneities and maintenance of the unity of the national economic space. We offer the classification of small and medium-sized enterprises in districts according to their role in these processes. Conclusions of the article may be used in the design of development programs for small and medium-sized enterprises in the regions of Russia.
