The article deals with the modern form of the employment relationship – freelance. Its brief history and etymology of the concept has been described. The distinction of the freelancing from the self-employment has been explained. The article considers the income sources of a freelancer on a real example of illustrators on the Internet. The statistics of an employment and self-employment, both in Russia and abroad, has been indicated. The author determines occupations that are and will be in demand on freelancing labor exchanges. The American classification of self-employed workers has been presented. The analysis of the advantages and disadvantages of freelancing has been given. A review of the legal framework and taxation problems in this area has been done. Also, the author gives the recommendations on solving freelancing problems and a brief guide of what a person should do if he/she wants to make money using social networks and to quickly find potential customers.

► freelance – is a such type of activity that allows to school children, students, pensioners and middle-aged people, who have problems with finding the official work, to earn money in case if they have a spare time; freelance can also create prerequisites to the international mobility, but freelancing is considered to be the unofficial part of the shadow economy, hence a number of problems at the state level occurs
► approximately 201 million people in the world (2015) are unemployed, while, according to some estimates, 35 % of the world’s population are self-employed
► Russian freelancers’ revenues are more than ordinary staff’s revenues by 1.5–2 times and are up to 50 000 – 100 000 rubles per month
► the traditional professions freelancing as a promising direction is becoming widespread
► international experience shows that the support of a freelancing begins to occur at the state level, since it becomes economically beneficial to all subjects of macroeconomic relations
► freelancing must be considered as a new form of labor relations, it should be admitted that its scales are rising and the world economy is transformed to the fact that the subjects are no longer willing to work for the common good, and are pursuing their individual (personal) goals
