In the conditions of Russian innovative development, the system of the complex management of companies' innovative activity must be created. The purpose of the article is to study the essence of issues and contradictions in theoretical and methodological developments that develop the idea of the essence and the subject of innovative activity in the theory of economic development, innovative management, theory of the enterprise. During the study, general theoretical and internal theoretical issues and contradictions are detected. General theoretical issues include: absolutization of the technical and technological field as the single field of innovative activity; absence of the system of independent factors listed for the single criterion (the subject of the innovative activity); absence of the single understanding of the essence of innovation and its relations to factors of industry. Internal theoretical contradictions include: division of the regulatory component and the structure in the new institutional theory; incorrect selection of parameters, description of cause-and-effect relations of the technological gap model; view on the innovative activity as the separated process; absolutization of the project approach to management of innovative activity. The article may be useful to developers of the complex management system for the companies' innovative activity.
