The article lays emphasis on the problem of the demand for young professionals on the labor market. Based on the materials of the expert poll of Vologda region’s employers that has been performed by Institute of Socio-economic Development of RAS Territory, the analysis of the economic demand for young professionals has been performed. The article also deals with the problems of professional training quality. The article has been supported by RSF (Russian Science Foundation) Grant No. 14-18-03120 “The quality of children population in the context of modernization”.
Highlights:
► along with the deficit of labor resources, one of the main problems of Russian economy is the imbalance between the demand and supply of labor force
► in 2000–2014 period, against the background of general unemployment decrease, there has been its increase in age groups of young and elderly people in the region
► the highest professional training quality is found among the young people who have graduated from higher and secondary vocational education institutions, at that, with the increase of educational level
► sometimes employers encounter the problem when graduates’ professional skills do not correspond to their professional duties; at that, more often they lack skills for their work; less frequently the employers face the problem of “overeducation”
► a considerable share of the people whose skills are below minimum requirements raises concerns: this fact was noted in 22 % of economic entities
► the employers tend to assess professional skills that have been achieved by young professionals as meeting the requirements, but, at the same time, they state that the performance in this category of personnel is average
► the employers believe that performance of young professionals can be improved by training of professional skills, higher discipline and ability to retrain
► possessing the information about what knowledge and skills an employee needs, educational institutions will be able to adjust their academic programs
