The article raises the issue of the need to take into account spatial factors when developing the strategical planning documents. Methodological features of formulation of the spatial development strategy are represented and explained. The correlation between strategical and territorial planning is shown using the example of the city of Yekaterinburg. The results of the study will be useful to regional and municipal administrative bodies when working out the base for the spatial development strategy. They can also take a proper place in the structure of scientific knowledge in the field of the regional and municipal economy.
