Abstract:

Development of computer technologies and information networks brings essential changes in science, process of new scientific knowledge acquiring. The number of the organizations providing access to scientific information and offering services intended to support scientific research is growing rapidly. Scientific and university libraries currently face the danger of being «pushed aside» from the main direction of science development. This unpleasant prospect can be avoided if a holistic approach to the problem of library services development will be found. Obviously, such approach should take into account the needs of scientists throughout the whole researchcycle: from generation and formulation of the idea and search financing to achieving results and their distribution in the scientific community. And it should suggest the ways of fulfilling them. Such holistic approach will allow touse the advantages of libraries most effectively for the purpose of their «survival» in modern conditions. The article describes the experience of foreign libraries which have already applied such approach. The Russian libraries shouldadopt the experience of the foreign colleagues also.
