The article dwells upon the main peculiarities of the gold-based monetary system which is called “the classical gold standard”. The proposed classification of the specific features of the gold standard leads us to the conclusion that it was probably the most productive monetary mechanism contributing to sustainable economic growth, stable money purchasing capacity and to the stability of the financial system as a whole.
