The European Union is expanding. It is an objective process that is associated with the globalization of the world economy. However, while the original members of the EU were the states with stable economies and long-term practice of partnerships, the new members of the EU and those who now claim the EU membership, have a huge gap in terms of GDP per capita. The article considers the related problems and estimates the prospects of the EU enlargement.
