The article considers the actual problem of one-industry towns, the aggravation of which is caused by the global economic crisis. The presence of the problem is stated by the authorities, corporate and scientific communities and there is a sharp social reaction of the population of one-industry towns. At the same time, the global scientific community has already developed an approach to this problem, which is the realization of the principle of sustainable development. This is a fundamental principle of urban planning. The article proves the need for a methodological basis of applying this principle in the conditions of one-industry towns.
