The article examines the level of poverty in the region (by the example of the Republic of North Ossetia - Alania). The author touches upon the issues of reforming the distribution system, the introduction of a progressive scale of income tax for individuals in order to improve the level and quality of life, which is the main purpose of the social and economic policy and the main criterion for its effectiveness.
