The article presents a description of the structure of the Russian population by the duration of residence in the place of permanent residence, made on the basis of empirical data of the panel study. The research possibilities and specifics of the survey are noted. The distribution of sample data on the general population allows us to draw the following conclusions: just over 40% of the population of Russia do not live in the place in which they were born. At the same time, between 5.9 and 6.8% of the population were born outside Russia. It is established that 43.9% of all persons currently living in the place of their birth, do not have migration experience. Taking into account the local natives who resettled, but returned to the settlement of their birth, the share of the population of Russia older than 14 years, who ever had the experience of resettlement for a period of more than six months is 76.1-77.6%.
