The article defines the place of the dairy industry in providing the population with food. The purpose, objectives and directions of development of the dairy industry in the framework of state programs for the development of agriculture and regulation of markets for agricultural products, raw materials and food are studied. The problems and directions of increasing the efficiency of the dairy subcomplex of the Novosibirsk region are defined. In the article the practical recommendations for improving the efficiency of milk production activities and stages of their implementation for improving the efficiency of milk production in agricultural organizations due to the introduction in the main herd heifers reared in breeding farms, and improvement of fodder base are suggested. The proposed measures to increase the efficiency of milk production in the region will contribute to improving the quality of products and production volumes in order to provide the population of the Novosibirsk region with dairy products in accordance with the recommended medical standards.
