The article focuses on ecological tourism. The concept, signs and principles of ecological tourism are considered. In connection with the principle of a limited number of visitors, approaches to determining the recreational capacity of protected areas were investigated. Based on the studied approaches and research results, a new approach was proposed to determine the recreational capacity as an organizational and economic tool for the development of ecological tourism in protected areas. On the example of the Kostomukshsky Strict Nature Reserve, which is part of the Green Belt of Fennoscandia, the calculation of the recreational capacity was carried out and recommendations were formulated on the main directions of development of ecological tourism in the reserve, which will be relevant both for this and for the other protected areas.
