Abstract:

The article discusses the spatial development of modern cities. The problem areas which emerge in metropolitan areas as a result of their uncontrolled growth are identified. The main factors of the cities' competitiveness are emphasized. The analysis of a number of indicators of transport and environmental spheres is conducted. The global trends and the threat of urban development, at which foreign urbanists point, are identified. The concept of the city for the pedestrian, as an example of revitalization of urban space, is given. It is noted that to enhance the competitive position of cities is needed to maintain and improve the level of comfort of the urban environment.
