Mega-events, sports and non-sporting, attracting a large number of visitors, have a great impact on the economy of the host city, the region and the country as a whole. This influence is due to the need to build new stadiums or reconstruct old ones, create the necessary transport and social infrastructure, which involves significant costs and changes in the urban environment. However, a review of international experience in the implementation of mega-events and an analysis of the short-and long-term consequences of their implementation should be preceded by a definition of what is meant by a mega-event. This article reviews the concepts of mega-events described in the literature; provides examples of foreign experience in the implementation of such events; and traces their role in the economy and social sphere of different countries. This review is important from the point of view of further study of short-term and long-term effects from the implementation of mega-events both abroad and in Russia.
