The article investigates some relevant aspects of guaranteed regional food security on the example of the Astrakhan region. The analysis of production of the main groups of agricultural products and their consumption on the basis of the developed norms of nutrition, self-sufficiency and balance of food supply to the residents of the region is conducted. On the basis of analytical studies of the problem, a set of factors to determine the most important directions of formation of a rational food balance of the region and promising agricultural policy is indicated. It closely intertwines the most important issues of food, economic, national security, self-sufficiency in food for their own use. The purpose of this study was the issues of food security in the Astrakhan region, its condition, problems and prospects. The study was conducted in the Astrakhan region on the basis of an analytical study of the state of agricultural production and the balance of food supply to residents of the region, as well as the prospects of self-sufficiency of residents of the region with natural food of domestic production. The results indicate the current deficit of the food balance for the production of grain and leguminous crops (without rice) – more than 73 thousand tons, milk – 150 thousand tons. For the production of meat products and meat the total (about 37.2 thousand tons) and the structural (pork – 17.3 thousand tons and poultry – about 30 thousand tons) deficit of products was formed. There is an unbalanced nutrition of the region's inhabitants, which is characterized by excessive consumption per capita: bakery products (34.4%), potatoes (16.7%) and meat (9.6%). At the same time there is an acute shortage in the consumption of milk and dairy products (38.1%), eggs and egg products (8.1%). In the course of the study the priorities for the development of agriculture were identified, the rationale for the need to improve some methodological approaches to the assessment of the cumulative characteristics that characterize food security and the organization of the monitoring system of production and quality of agricultural products was given.
