The study of the peculiarities of the functioning of small and medium-sized businesses in Russia is due to the discrepancy between the needs for financial support of entrepreneurship and the current model of financial resources supply in Russia. On the basis of the statistical material, the basic factors that have the most significant impact on the conduct of small and medium-sized businesses in the conditions of economic instability and volatility in the world markets are determined. It is proved that at the present stage the main problems in Russia are: lack of own financial resources and fixed assets; distrust on the part of credit institutions and unwillingness to carry out their lending without guarantees or stable collateral; unavailability of financing in the form of leasing; low efficiency of functioning of the existing guarantee mechanism of support of small and medium business, etc.
