The article presents the results of diagnostics of the ecological safety of the regions on the example of Central Russia, namely the subjects of the Central federal district. The regional peculiarities of this problem, as a subject of research, showed the relevance of the topic in most of the subjects of the district. An indicative research method allowed economic threat assessment and determine levels of environmental safety. At present, there are no regional threshold criteria for determining the level of environmental safety due to the complexity of their calculation related to the specific socio-economic development of each of the subjects. In this regard, the study attempted to justify some of the indicators on the basis of which the proposed typologies of regions in terms of environmental safety. Diagnostics of environmental safety according to the threshold criteria revealed the absence in the macroregion of subjects in the high-risk zone and the highest concentration in the medium-level group. The result of the research is the conclusions on reducing the crisis of problems in the territory of the macro-region, their zonality and the need to take into account to increase the effectiveness of management actions in the regions.
