Agriculture, being the main branch ensuring food security of the country, needs constant state support. The authors argue that their own savings can not provide expanded reproduction of agricultural producers. The article notes that in recent decades the vector to support the sustainable development of this industry has become one of the priorities of the economic policy of the state. The article provides an overview of the legal acts and state programs in the field, analyzes the effectiveness of agricultural enterprises in Russia. As an example, the performance indicators of agricultural enterprises of the Lipetsk region are considered. The authors identify the main distinctive features of lending to agricultural enterprises, note the problems and determine the need to continue the use of various mechanisms of state support for this sector of the economy.
