The State has recently placed special focus on the development of the Russian agriculture due to the need to ensure national economic security in general and food security in particular. In this regard, the study of current complex and contradictory trends in functioning of the Russian agro-industrial complex is of particular interest. In this article we have analyzed the main statistical data characterizing the state of Russian agriculture, identified positive and negative characteristics of its development. The article highlights the main entities of the Russian Federation, specializing in agricultural production, including the southern regions of Russia. The article shows that the positive trends resulting from the growth of agricultural production and grain harvest increase grain exports from the Russian Federation, with potential for price growth and deficit on the domestic market. In conclusion, the authors outline the key development tasks of Russian agriculture and their possible solutions.
