The article presents theoretical and analytical review of definitions of the concepts ‘family business, ‘family’ and ‘entrepreneur’. We show a number of the main trends in modern researches on “family business” institution. We found out that there are 5 five main definitions of family business in Russian market economy, such as difficult economic category, dual management practices, specific social form of business, type of economic behavior of a social unit and a way to realize family’s entrepreneurial potential. We also found out that much of scientific works in a research on modern Russian family business are focused on an insufficient development of transfer mechanisms of family business to successors, and on the low level of awareness of the importance of these mechanisms’ development among enterprises owners. We note that Russian authors do not pay much attention to the research problem of organizational culture’s specifics and its differences from non-family enterprises, which is popular in the West today. The last domestic publications focus mainly on the issues of transfer and inheritance of family business, probably because of intersection of consulting and research interests. We present author's approach to the definition of the concepts ‘family’ and ‘family business.
