The article studies the role of entrepreneurial activity of students and teachers in the transformation of Russian universities by entrepreneurial type. The need to transfer universities to entrepreneurial university model, which is one of the components of the "triple helix" by H. Etzkowitz and L. Leydesdorff, is caused by a rethinking of university’s role in the technology transfer system. The very higher educational institutions in the "triple helix" system are the booster of practically applicable scientific knowledge, which is realized in the business environment through academic entrepreneurship. The author analyzed conditions under which Russian universities are transforming to the entrepreneurial model at the present time. The paper presents the results of a study of opinions of students of St. Petersburg universities on their wish to start their own business and on the support that, from their point of view, can be provided by the university. The obtained results were compared to the results of a study carried out within the framework of Global University Entrepreneurial Spirit Students‘ Survey – GUESSS. The study also showed that students still have a poor understanding of how the university can support them in starting their own business.
