The article reviews different methods of calculating the required number of staff number employed in maintenance, points out the factors, limiting the applicability of these methods in relation to maintenance staff. On the basis of the integral approach to substantiating the required maintenance staff number at mining and metals enterprises the article determines internal productional amounts of spare labor time which makes possible the calculation of timing standards for equipment repairs and maintenance, and also of workforce reserves. In aggregate, implementation of the results obtained have positive effect on the enterprises activities.
