Matters of steady development were discussed in the economic literature in the 90-ies of the last century. However, the financial and economic crisis which burst out at the end of 2008 has put this problem to scientists and practitioners with a new urgency. Considering the theoretical and practical aspects of the "steadiness" concept the authors identify factors which affect it at the level of the economic system and at the enterprise level.
