The actual problem of hydroelectric power stations (HPSs) operation on lowland rivers is discussed in the article. According to the authors’ point of view, hydroelectric power stations are no longer able to provide the necessary amount of electricity to the growing needs of the population in the world. At the same time, there is a risk of food shortages as a result of harm to river flora and fauna. The article assesses the possible results of improving food security in Russia after the demolition of hydroelectric power stations, and offers alternatives to replace them. The article will be of interest to specialists in food security problems.
